Sacred Heart Art
Sacred Heart Art. Metaphor of the heart can be traced in the 11th century, and the cult of the Sacred Heart as the center of all spiritual in man developed in the XIII century. The heart has been synonymous to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in connection with which a wound on the body of Christ at the crucifixion was moved from the right to the left side of the body. And Mary’s heart was displayed as pierced by seven swords of sorrow. She devoted herself and her country to the veneration of his heart, and established a Sacred Heart feast day.
Veneration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus has a long history. The first mention, pointing to its existence (or occurrence) are XI-XIII centuries. One of them we find in the “Vitis mystica”, work attributed to the holy Bonaventure (1221-1274). It is known that the Sacred Heart was worshiped in the families of St. Matilda (d. 1298) and St. Gertrude (1256-1302). St. Gertrude – one of the most famous German mystics. Particularly important for the history of the cult of the Sacred Heart is her very first vision, which took place on the feast of St. John the Evangelist in 1281. Having put a head to the wound of Christ, she could hear his heart beating. Then she asked John why he had not said a word about the beating Heart of Christ after he heard it on the Last Supper? John told her that he kept secret because it was supposed to open in the next sad times when to rekindle the love in people’s hearts.
It is understandable why the attention to the Heart of Christ arose at this time. In the XII century the widespread cult of veneration of the sacred humanity of Christ, was accompanied by a strong interest to the events of his earthly life, the places related to these events, His suffering and the instruments of these sufferings.
In XIII-XVI centuries. veneration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus began to spread, we find it in the lives of the saints, in the practices of the Franciscan, Dominican, Carthusian orders. Parallel with it there was a deep veneration of five wounds of Christ, with the cult of central wound – the Heart. Internal development of mysticism of the Sacred Heart during this period was not received.
Decline of the Middle Ages was a time when faithful Christians tried to resist the fall of morals and the spread of the “philosophy” of permissiveness, resorting to the ascetic spiritual practices, meditation, spiritual exercises. Set of pious laity left the world, devoting life to contemplation. Against this background, in the XVI century formed ascetic practice of worship Heart of Jesus with prayers and exercises. It is much praised by his contemporaries. Louis of Blois and Blessed John of Avila wrote about it. Lanspergy Carthusian (1489-1539), an ascetic and a writer, persistently called all Christians to worship the Sacred Heart. He was the first to clearly and convincingly laid the foundations and principles on which the reverence had grown.
Sharp protests against the cult of the Heart of Jesus were heard in the camp of the Jansenists (opposition movement in the Catholic Church of XVII-XVIII centuries, eventually separated from it), and among theologians rationalists of Enlightenment. In the XX century, an attempt to give a better justification for the practice of honoring the Heart of Jesus has taken a prominent German theologian Karl Rahner, a Jesuit. He pointed to the symbolic meaning of “heart” as the great-Word, great-concepts, which are based on the Holy Scriptures and the ancient church practice, as well as the center of the personality, the center of the human “I” as such. Thus, we can speak of the theological and anthropological foundations of the cult. Heart of Jesus – is the center of his perceived hypostasis of the Word of humanity, full of the merciful love of Christ to God-manhood.
Liturgical texts emphasize the need for a holiday likening Jesus’ heart and the ability to recognize His brothers and Preface indicates a spear pierced Heart of Jesus as a source of sanctifying grace of the sacraments of Baptism and the Eucharist, without which salvation is impossible.
In the modern church calendar to the Heart of Jesus, in addition to the special holiday dedicated every first Friday of the month and the entire month of June.
