Topiary is a creative partnership of a human and mother nature. And the result of this complex but beautiful artistic process is a stunning living art. However, the art is available not only for professional artists and designers, but also for those among us with the green thumbs and the space to do it.
In fact, these fantastic green worlds begin with a steel frame covered with steel mesh. Next, this mesh is covered with sphagnum moss and soil (seeded with all sorts of plants). Underneath the mesh, a network of irrigation channels supply water to the plants on the surface, helping them grow.
Originally Topiary – the art of ornamental trees and shrubs haircuts. First ornamental horticulture was mentioned by the Romans in the 38th BC, though the famous Hanging Gardens of Babylon are nothing like the ornamental garden. In the first century AD, Pliny the Elder mentions the court gardener Kalvene who created the first neatly trimmed tree. At this time the topiary plants decorated Roman villas, where slaves gardeners took care of them.
From Rome topiary tradition spread to Europe. In the Time of Troubles topiary skills preserved in monasteries, where not only bred ornamental gardens, but also conducted a detailed record of their creation. Thanks to them during the Renaissance art of topiary received a new impetus that led to the creation of the Versailles palace and park ensemble in the 17th century. Park of Versailles created by Andre Le Notre, is still a model of classical topiary art. Another famous garden of the time – ensemble of Hampton Court in England. Along with the French artsy style existed Dutch (more discreet and home) and Italian (decorative, with many statues).
