Natalie Blake Ceramic tiles
The work of American artist Natalie Blake (Natalie Blake Studios) is not just tiles, it is a true piece of art, which turns the flat wall into a three-dimensional sculpture. “Old, but a modern form of art” – a definition that Natalie gives. Blake and her creative team of five craftsmen create beautiful wave-shaped tiles. Each tile bears the individual stamp of the artist and created specifically for the wall composition. The tiles are unique, and no two identical tiles.
The drawing on the tiles is applied in traditional Italian “scratching” technique. The favorite motifs – fauna and underwater kingdom. In conjunction with the surface and bulk palette of 35 shades of glaze it creates depth and expressiveness. Due to the special play of light, gorgeous ceramic art pieces often resemble a luxurious tapestry or carpet, not ceramic.
In addition to the tiles, Natalie makes vases and dishes. Some vases she paints in Italian technique of sgraffito (scratching), but others remain smooth – for example, the work of the original “Chess” collection.
