Weird dolls inhabiting Nagoro village
No Hallowe’en story can scare you more than the inhabitants of the real Japanese village of Nagoro, inhabited by weird life-size dolls of dead people. Slowly dying village, due to the natural death of its people, it is turning into a surreal puppet world of schoolchildren, teachers, and even a principal. Also, farmers working on the field, residents waiting for their bus at the bus stop, etc.
Everything in this scenery – a school, bus stop, field – handmade by a local craftswoman Ayano Tsukimi. She shares her thoughts and story in a 2014 documentary “The Valley Of Dolls” by Fritz Schumann.

Painted Egg Mosaics by Oksana Mas
In fact, Ukrainian artist Oksana Mas lives and works between Odessa, Stockholm, Barcelona and Moscow. She creates incredible egg portraits from hand-painted wooden eggs in mosaic technique. Her unique artwork of Easter egg mosaics appeared at different art exhibitions, and in particular, in the Venice Biennale.
According to Oksana, she finds inspiration in traditional Ukrainian painted wooden eggs – krashenki. Noteworthy, Oksana doesn’t paint these eggs herself, they are already painted by different people to celebrate Easter, and she is just experimenting with them to create her art. So if you come close to the installation you may admire separate pieces of her creation, and the same pleasure you’ll have looking at the pictures at a distance.

Birds on found paper by Paula Swisher
According to belief, talented people are talented in everything. And Paula Swisher, American artist, professor at the University of Kutstauna, Pennsylvania just proves this.
In fact, she combines two worlds – the creative and the technical. The hand-drawn mark, grid-based design, and infographics are all things that keep her excited. Her colorful pencil and gouache drawings of beautiful birds on found paper – technical drawings, diagrams, old book pages, mails are impressive. According to Paula Swisher herself, she creates “visual metaphors”. Swisher teaches Web Design in the Art Department at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Paula holds an M.F.A. in Painting from Clemson University and a B.A. in Art from Houghton College.

Illustrator Suthipa Kamyam

Graphic designer and Illustrator Suthipa Kamyam is from Bangkok (Thailand). In 2006 she graduated from Faculty of Fine and Applied Art of Chulalongkorn University with BA in Creative Art (Honor). Two years later she had her MFA in Design (Individual Specialization) after graduating from HDK-School of Design and Craft, in Goteborg, Sweden. Kamyam worked in Goteborg and Bangkok as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator. Since 2011 she has been a freelance Illustrator. Her portfolio consists of monochrome works executed in graphite. It’s hard to imagine how much endurance, patience and love needed to create such a work of excellence and technique quality. Maximum detailing, competent interpretation of textures and line-up on a sheet give excellent results, appreciated by customers and prospects, and professional artists.

Beautiful British artist and illustrator, Amy Dover is from County Durham, North East England. She creates beautiful pencil drawings reflecting the dark side of human nature. And this hidden world originates in the folk tales, mythology, and fables of her childhood. Illustrations by Amy Dover touch the eternal themes of death and life, loss, failure, greed, humiliation, and deceit. Characters of cannibalistic crows, beasts, humiliated bears, and the innocence and loss of a dead sparrow. She makes us think, and this matters.

British paper sculptor Sher Christopher creates amazing things from paper, they look like origami, but they are not. Her sculptures and portraits are complex and expressive, as if they live their own fairytale paper-life. Noyeworthy, she manages to convey complex emotions … For instance, this young woman whose pain is palpable.
According to Sher Christopher, the sculpture ‘Sorrow’ is a very, very personal piece, an auto-biographical one. In 2009 Sher’s Mum was diagnosed with cancer, with a brain tumor, and had only a few months left to live. It was the most devastating news. Sher couldn’t work at the time, and was utterly lost. This image was a recurring one in her thoughts and dreams, and the only image that began to express how she felt.

Imagine how much patience, skills and overall awesomeness an artist needs to create such intricate thread illustrations, which are actually embroidery? According to a talented Japanese artist Miyuki Sakai, he has been creating illustrations for more than twenty years. Meanwhile, for embroidering his award-winning illustrations he uses a sewing machine.
Miyuki Sakai grew up in Osaka, Japan. While a child, Miyuki watched her mother make her family’s clothes and she adopted the sewing machine for her unique style. After she graduated from the Art college in Kyoto, she moved to Tokyo and started working as a free-lance illustrator, taking part in several art exhibitions. Her work in a Martha Stewart living article called ‘Viva la tarte!’ won a bronze prize for the editorial design category in ADC 2011 awards. Miyuki Sakai lives in San Francisco.
